Testing prototypes of hearing aid accessories with patients
GN Hearing (ReSound) · Senior UX Designer, 2018–2019
The situation
ReSound was developing new accessories for their hearing aids: a charger and a remote control. My job was to bring in insights from hearing aid patients and feed that back into the design. I worked closely with the industrial designers, helping them see how real people actually handle these things.
What we found
We worked iteratively. Every time a new prototype was ready, like a 3D print or a weighted plastic dummy, we tested it with patients. – People struggled to get the hearing aids in and out of the charger. The internal layout wasn't intuitive. – The remote's weight and feel were off, not premium enough. – The black version was too easy to lose, for example in the bottom of a purse. – The remote was hard to orient by feel. Printing the + and – buttons let people find the right way up without looking.
The outcome
After several rounds of testing, both products were released: the ReSound Standard Charger and the ReSound Remote Control.
